I am slightly confused by these posts. I have had a JD 750 for 15 years and loved it. I've done everything but set if on fire and it will not die. I am now looking at a 4300 and love it. More comfortable, easy to steer, more features, and still seems to have the JD quality that I'm used to. If there is any reason for me not to get the 4300, somebody please tell me. ....

Saw an interesting one on the lot at my local dealer today. Ford 1910 w/ 770B Loader, MFWD, 4 x 4 Trans., block heater He wants $10,500. I don't know the year but appears to have about 1500 hours based on "eyeball" of tire wear (tach broken). Tractor in very good condition, paint original. Only bad thing I noticed was leak from front differential. I've also heard something about a cylinder liner problem/issue with the xx10 series tractors. Any truth to that?

I own this exact tractor and loader. In 1991 I paid $9000.00 at an auction. It had 270 hours on it.It has ROPS on it and was made in 1986 according to the serial number. This tractor has performed flawlessly; one hydraulic cylinder on the loader popped a seal on a cold day and a retaining washer scored the ram. I`ve seen this set-up advertised on a dealer lot 2 years ago for 13,000.00. I don`t know the hours that were on it and I assume the 13,000 was pre-dickering. I`ve got 740 hrs on it now.I`m unaware of any sleeve/cylinder problems. The differential lock stuck in "engage" and I had to take the top of the differential off [the seat and 3-point lift mechanism box]in order to disengage it. Nothing was busted but I cleaned out all the metal filings and it`s worked fine since. I can certainly see the logic of a transmission oil change at 50 or 100 hrs. In fact I`d recommend a drain and lavage with fuel oil. There was alotof fillings.A drain plug with a magnet would make sense. Also the battery is in front of the radiator which has a "sceen-door"screen in front of it and debri building up will cause it to heat up,especially wading through timothy or mature thisthle. ....

Ron,is this a used tractor, I assume? The early 4000 series did have some issues that could be of some concern. Can you find out if all of the updates are done? If a dealer has the tractor, they should be able to check the claim history on it and tell you any work that has been done under warranty. I am not peronally too fond of the gear drive transmission on the 4000 series. The hydro is a better choice. What kind of work do you plan to do with it? If all of the updates have been done on an early tractor, it should be a reliable machine. If you can find out the serial number, I might be able to help determine which updates , if any it should have done if your dealer can't help you. ....

Some of the earlier versions had problems with front axle scuff but there was a PIP out to replace them if the tractor had a MMM. I think you will be very impressed and satisfied with the 4300. If the tractor does not have this PIP applied, I would demo and verify the front axle does not have this problem as you DO NOT want it if you plan to use it to cut lawns/turf (the front axle will tear up the turf). I think you would be even more so with the 4310 equipped with ehydro. All depends on your person preferences. If you go waaaaay back in this section (ie: 1999 - 2001 time frame) you will find several posts on these tractors as they were going through some growing pains when they first came out. You're gonna make Art feel bad talking about that John Deere QUALITY. ;o) ....
